Convert AVI to a VTT caption file

AVI is one of the oldest video containers, still common in archival footage, older camcorder exports, and legacy software output. SnailText extracts the audio, transcribes the speech with the Whisper model, and writes a phrase-level VTT, all on your machine.

You get a separate .vtt file you can attach to the video in any player that accepts WebVTT or upload to a streaming platform. AVI uses a one-time codec pack the app downloads for you.

How do I convert an AVI to a VTT file?

Why use VTT instead of SRT for AVI?
VTT (WebVTT) is the web-native caption format for HTML5 video and streaming platforms. SRT is older and more widely supported by media players and editing tools. If you are publishing the AVI content on a website or streaming platform, VTT is usually what you want. SnailText generates both.
What is the difference between AVI to VTT and AVI to text?
AVI to VTT produces a timed caption file (.vtt) you attach to the video. AVI to text produces a plain transcript with no timestamps. SnailText does both, you just pick the output before the run.
Does SnailText burn the subtitles into the video when I use AVI to VTT?
