Convert M4A to a VTT caption file

M4A is the audio format iPhone Voice Memos and macOS Voice Memos use by default. VTT (WebVTT) is the caption format HTML5 video and streaming platforms accept natively. SnailText connects the two: it reads the M4A, transcribes the speech with the Whisper model, and writes a phrase-level VTT, all on your machine.

You get a separate .vtt file ready to reference in a video player or upload to a platform. M4A works immediately with no extra codec download.

How to convert M4A to VTT

What is the difference between M4A to VTT and M4A to SRT?
VTT (WebVTT) is the web-native format for HTML5 video and streaming platforms. SRT is older and better supported in media players and editing tools. If you are publishing on a website or YouTube, VTT is usually what you want. SnailText generates both.
Can I use the VTT from an M4A on YouTube?
Yes. YouTube accepts VTT as a caption file. Once SnailText generates the .vtt from your M4A, upload it to your video on YouTube as a subtitle track.
Does SnailText burn the subtitles into the video when I use M4A to VTT?
No. SnailText writes a separate VTT file and does not hardcode captions into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and lets you attach them in any player or editor. If you want them burned in, overlay the file in a video editor afterward.
