MKV is the open Matroska container used by screen recorders, media archives, and many downloads. SnailText extracts the audio track, transcribes the speech with the Whisper model, and writes a phrase-level SRT, all on your machine.

You get a separate .srt file, not captions burned into the video, so the subtitles stay editable and you can attach them wherever you need them.
